DescriptionImage of the exterior western façade of Chartres Cathedral set against a stark white sky. The cathedral’s three levels are built of limestone and richly embellished with elongated late Romanesque style figures of kings and queens along with other Biblical relief sculptures. The three portals are flanked on either side by tall mismatched spires with a large rose window in the center.Exhibition HistoryRotation 27. The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, MO, August 23, 2019–February 2, 2020, no cat.
Markus Brunetti (and his partner, Betty Schöner) create large scale, hyperreal views of medieval European churches. He photographs architectural details one square meter at a time. The thousands of digital captures are painstakingly combined in the final image. Here, modern day elements like cars, tourists, and streetlights are removed. In startlingly sharp focus, viewers are pulled in to inspect details bringing them closer to the experience of standing in front of the building.
