DescriptionImage of three men seated around a small wooden table where they play dominoes. They are all wearing suits with hats. The man on the right is wearing checkered pants and his hands are raised. The bearded man on the left smiles as he lays down his domino. This half plate uncased daguerreotype is housed in a raised passé-partout enclosure with reverse painted cover glass and dark green paper backing.Gallery LabelBy the mid-1850s, photographic exposure times were less than a minute, but sitters were still required to sit for several seconds, making spontaneous poses difficult. Nonetheless, photographers like this one strove to imitate candid moments of everyday life. The photographer poses the three men as naturalistically as possible. The man on the right raises his hands in surprise or indignation, reacting to his opponent’s play as the third player looks on.
