DescriptionIllustration of mustachioed man, Louis Daguerre, wearing fine suit with tall collar that reaches his chin. His hair is parted on the side and soft curls fall over his ears.Gallery LabelThis lithograph (a type of print) depicts Louis-Jacques-Mandé Daguerre two years before he introduced his daguerreotype to the public on January 7, 1839. This invention astonished the world with its “exquisite minuteness of delineation,” as described by inventor Samuel F.B. Morse. Prior to that moment, Daguerre was known in artistic circles as a painter and owner of a Parisian diorama, a popular form of entertainment. Considered a precursor to cinema, the diorama immersed viewers in a theatrical installation that used shifting light on painted backdrops to create special effects.
