DescriptionImage of rocks scattered over a rough surface with the largest rock near the center. A grid of plus signs is printed over the image.Gallery LabelDescriptions of the moon’s surface remained shrouded in speculation until astronauts photographed the lunar terrain in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Michael Bishop emulated the look of NASA’s pictures in a body of work titled Space/Technology. At first glance, the sparse landscape and horizonless vantage point seen through a gridded surface appear remarkably similar to NASA’s official photographs (see Moonscape, 1971, which hangs nearby). A closer reading of the images reveals discarded cans or Bishop’s shadow: a humorous reminder that these views are earthbound fabrications.
