DescriptionSepia toned image of desert landscape with low-lying mountains and a divided road; a prominent jagged X is gouged across the negative, thus partially obscuring the image.Gallery LabelTo produce this print, Thomas Barrow photographed a spare landscape and then scratched his negative with a large X. Printing from the altered negative, he calls attention to the marring of the subject matter. This process— which simultaneously reveals and obscures the image—emphasizes the photograph’s status as an object, rather than a transparent "window-on-the-world."
