Pierre Trémaux was a French architect, archaeologist, and photographer. This is one of his most famous and mysterious images—a group of Turkish steles, or commemorative stone columns with detailed carvings, rendered with a very shallow depth of focus. Trémaux recorded historical artifacts and native peoples throughout the Middle East, Asia Minor, and North Africa.
