DescriptionPortrait of woman in full-length formal dress standing with elbow resting on plinth beneath column. She wears a satin gown with lace, striped panels, and dark buttons on the bodice.Exhibition HistoryRotation 25. The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, MO, October 19, 2018- March 17, 2019, no cat.
Trained as a sculptor, Antoine-Samuel Adam-Salomon took up photography in the 1850s. He produced thousands of photographs and earned high praise for his portraiture. In this striking view of a young woman, Adam-Salomon made adept use of light and shadow to highlight the textures and patterns of his subject’s dress. To ensure such results, he was rumored to spend one hour posing his sitters, fifteen seconds taking the exposure, and up to three hours printing.
