How meaningful are the images we post on social media?

This photograph records a meticulously constructed model of cheese slices; the model itself is based on a cell phone image. After Thomas Demand completed the sculpture, he photographed and destroyed the model. The time and effort required to produce the work stands in stark contrast to the immediacy and mediocrity of the original cell phone image. Demand here calls into question the significance of such images—that may momentarily grab our attention on social media but soon fade from memory—as historical records.
