DescriptionThe sculpture is an exterior side panel that would have attached to bench seating on a carousel. It has the appearance of a stylized Roman chariot. The piece is generally U-shaped, the right side of it forming the front of the chariot, and the left side forming the back, with one spoked wheel carved into each side. There are two eagles on the front, one forming the front edge of the chariot car, the other perched atop it, holding a garland in its beak. An armored warrior forms the back of the chariot car. There are also dragon-like heads on the upper edge of the back and extending out in front of the front wheel. The two wheels contain multiple blue faceted glass insets aligned with the wheel spokes. The top edge of the chariot front has a rounded fret design with red and white faceted insets placed in the center of the frets. The reverse of the panel retains fragments of upholstery and brackets which would have supported the seating. The base color of the chariot body is a faded red. The decorative elements are green, gold, blue, and a silvery-grey.Provenance
