DescriptionImage of a bearded man seated against a pillow and striped bedding with eyes closed.Gallery LabelThis portrait of poet and essayist Edwin Denby is at once gentle and confrontational, suggesting the mystery and weight of life. Hujar’s mature work came out of the political turmoil and sexual revolution of the 1970s and 1980s in New York. The result is a remarkable body of work, at once poetic, gritty, and technically refined. Long relegated to the margins of photographic history, Hujar is now recognized as a key figure in the photography scene of this era.
