DescriptionImage of a figure sitting with his back to the viewer on the edge of a cliff overlooking a river which runs through a large canyon with billowy clouds above. Large rock outcroppings flank both left and right side of figure.Gallery LabelTseng Kwong Chi explored the themes of personal and cultural identity on a vast public stage. For his Expeditionary Series, Tseng recorded himself in front of a great variety of global landmarks, posed in the guise of his alter-ego, a fictional foreign emissary or ambassador. The subject of these oddly powerful images can be read as either friend or spy, man of the world or perpetual outsider. Born in Hong Kong, Tseng studied art in Paris before coming to New York in 1978, where he became part of the city’s art and club scene.
