DescriptionImage of horse's hindquarters and tail with sphinx and pyramid in background.Gallery LabelVivian Maier took this curious photograph while vacationing in Egypt in 1959. Foregrounding the rear of a horse rather than the Great Sphinx of Giza in the distance, Maier reveals her sense of humor and a talent for composing unexpected juxtapositions.
Maier worked most of her life as a nanny for well-to-do suburban Chicago families. She also took thousands of photographs as she walked the city streets or travelled abroad. Maier never sought recognition for her work. Her achievements became known after her death, when over 100,000 negatives were discovered in a storage locker that Maier was forced to sell.
