Russell Lee was hired by the government-funded Farm Security Administration (FSA) to document the impact of the Great Depression on people’s lives and garner support for New Deal programs. In 1940, Lee made this family portrait while working in the small desert community of Pie Town, New Mexico.

Most FSA photographs were produced using black-and-white film. Several photographers, however, also worked in color. To make this image, Lee used Kodachrome. This slide film rendered its subjects with rich, saturated tones that convey the color of fabrics and advertisements of the time.
