InscribedPrinted captions on paper, attached to mount verso, in black type: "Sampans. / A new arrival is at once struck with / the native boats or sampans which flock / round a vessel for conveyance of passen- / gers and baggage to the shore--their / simplicity of construction-their clean- / liness--and at the same time the neat- / ness of their fittings are noticeable. / ¶ The sampan is generally propelled by / one man--its owner--who uses a long / oar with a slight bend toward the han- / dle which assists the sculler in using it. / From their shape sampans are safe and / commodious."
