DescriptionProfile image of man wearing jellabiya seated on camel with harness. The rider is holding a long, narrow rod and is posed in front of a two-toned wall.Gallery LabelA central figure in French photography of the 1850s, Gustave Le Gray was a passionate advocate of the medium’s artistic potential. He made major artistic and technical contributions in the realm of paper photography. Although he had a successful career in Paris, Le Gray incurred huge debts and closed his studio in 1859. He abandoned his family and fled the country to escape creditors. After touring areas like Greece, Istanbul and Palestine, Le Gray settled in Egypt in 1864. He spent the last 20 years of his life photographing his surroundings,as seen here, never returning to France.
