DescriptionImage of a man carving a decorative detail into facade of building (New Paris Opera).Gallery LabelBetween 1865 and 1872, Louis-Émile Durandelle produced approximately one-hundred and fifteen photographs recording the construction and decoration of the new Parisian opera house, a neo-Baroque structure designed by Charles Garnier. In this intimate view, Durandelle conveys the scale and grandeur of the building project by including stone carvers at work on elements of a decorative frieze in the background. Construction on the Opéra was completed in 1875. The following year, Durandelle published a portfolio of prints from his ten-year project, titled Le Nouvel Opéra de Paris: Sculpture Ornementale.
