Before the invention of photography in 1839, artists and scientists, such as Sir John Herschel, used lens-based tools like the camera lucida as drawing aids. A camera lucida serves as a tracing device: it has a prism that focuses light rays to reflect a subject onto a drawing surface. Herschel used his scientific skills to experiment with photography. He discovered a fixing agent that made photographic images more permanent. He also coined the terms photography, positive, and negative.
