DescriptionImage of a young man sitting in the grass with young men standing behind him and looking down towards him.Gallery Label

I photographed standing alone before the camera, face to face. I felt history should perceive these dedicated protestors as individuals and not just faces in the crowd. -Bruce Davidson

In this photograph, Winston Locket sits on the ground staring up at a group of young white men encircling him. Locket, alongside other protestors, retraced the steps of William Lewis Moore, a white postman and activist who was murdered while marching across the South to hand-deliver a letter in support of civil rights to the governor of Mississippi. During an interview later in his life, Locket recalled feeling exhausted and scared and said he was often labeled as a troublemaker when confronted by racist white men along the route.
