NOTES:

[1] This object was lent by Raoul Lehuard to the exhibition Kongo at Galerie Bernard Dulon, Paris in 1991. Lehuard founded the journal Arts d’Afrique Noire in 1972 and frequently contributed his own writings on African art. Lehuard inherited a collection of African objects from his father Robert Lehuard (1902-1983), who collected them in Congo in the 1920s and 1930s, but it is unclear if Raoul Lehuard inherited this whistle from his father or acquired it personally by other means.

[2] Galerie Ratton-Hourdé archives, with thanks to Elisa Bautheir, Galerie Philippe Ratton for providing this information. Raoul Lehuard and his wife Nadine sold a large part of their collection to Galerie Ratton-Hourdé in 1998-1999.
