DescriptionImage of a hand-painted sign of a bird standing on a nest of eggs; the sign is hanging with a chain between two wooden fence posts.Gallery LabelLarry Schwarm photographed this hand-painted sign as part of the Kansas photographic survey of 1974, organized by curator Jim Enyeart and funded by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). Enyeart, a photographer himself, brought together several artists, including Schwarm and Terry Evans, who traveled throughout the state photographing representative subjects. While Evans focused on people, Schwarm photographed aspects of the social landscape, and Enyeart recorded architecture. The resulting project, titled No Mountains in the Way, served as a prototype for later NEA survey projects.
