Rotation 22. The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art,
Kansas City, MO, August 10, 2016- January 8, 2017, no cat.
In 1990, Barbara Bosworth set out across the United States to photograph trees listed on the National Register of Big Trees. She sought to convey both her subjects’ expansiveness and their relationship to their surroundings. For example, here she included details, such as a nearby fence and field, to help give a sense of scale and a feeling for place. Bosworth often worked in a multi-panel format. This image is a diptych, containing two panels that feature an enormous American elm.
