Alec Soth’s photographs are both records of a particular time and place as well as personal observations of contemporary American culture. For his project Sleeping by the Mississippi, which includes this photograph, Alec Soth traveled along the Mississippi River—the symbolic and geographic heart of America—from Minnesota south to Louisiana. Here, Soth depicts the boyhood bed of famed aviator Charles Lindbergh. Its humble simplicity stands in marked contrast to the mythic stature of Lindbergh himself. This conflation of history, legend and socio-economic reality informs much of Soth’s work.
