DescriptionRed silk pile of two heights on a ground of silver-gilt thread and yellow silk. The lower edge is decorated with a 17th c. (?) fringed braid of red silk and silver-gilt thread. Put together from three horizontal pieces of the same velvet, but not perfectly matched at the joins. The top panel is pieced from fragments, and the bottom panel has a strip pieced in down one side.Gallery LabelThe bold, asymmetrical pattern and exotic motifs of this richly hued panel reflect Near- and Far-Eastern influences on 15th-century European textiles. Undulating foliage encircles a stylized pomegranate that is crowned with an ogee arch (opposed curved arcs), common in early Indian and later Chinese architecture. Reminiscent of the pomegranate's brilliantly colored seeds, the ruby-red design contrasts with the yellow-gold ground, which is enriched with silver-gilt thread. Although Italy was the most prolific weaving center, Spanish textiles in this style, which remained popular into the 17th century, are virtually indistinguishable from Italian textiles.
