DescriptionA silver base in the shape of a short, rectangular pyramid with a silver and turquoise inlaid Knife Wing God figure on the top ridge of the pyramid.Gallery Label
This paperweight was commissioned by the renowned Indian trader C.G. Wallace, who owned a store at Zuni Pueblo for nearly 40 years (1920–1958). Wallace played a critical role in developing the jewelry produced at Zuni and throughout the Southwest by engaging the most skilled and innovative artists and vigorously promoting their work. He commissioned this unique object for himself from two of his finest silversmiths, who often worked in collaboration. The human-bird figure represents Knife Wing, one of the major deities of the Zuni, whose wings and tail are covered with flint blades. Knife Wing is regarded as the original war god, and his roles in Zuni ceremonial life and folklore are varied and complex.
