DescriptionImage of a "landscape" abstraction; a rounder hill slopes down from the left. A mottling effect covers the image with a dark band of black across the bottom.Exhibition HistoryRotation 25. The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, MO, October 19, 2018- March 17, 2019, no cat.
Though this photograph appears to be a minimal landscape photograph, Alison Rossiter made it without a camera, using expired photographic paper. When developed, the outdated material produces unpredictable results. In this instance, the mottled appearance of the surface could suggest clouds. Rossiter manipulates chemicals in a variety of ways, by dipping sheets into baths or pouring liquid directly onto the surface. The resulting image celebrates the history of the medium and the magic of darkroom experimentation.
