In the form of a shadow or a reflection, Lee Friedlander regularly trespassed upon his own photographs. Often his presence is illusive, benign, or silly, but in New York City, 1966, Friedlander’s shadow transforms the photograph, suggesting a menacing dynamic between himself and the woman he so closely follows.
