DescriptionYoung black man being carried by white police officers. Phone booth with broken glass in background.Gallery Label

The subject of this photograph, Eddie Brown, volunteered to be arrested to fight for Civil Rights. This photograph was often reproduced as an example of peaceful black resistance and nonviolent demonstration during the heated years of the movement. Danny Lyon documented this event as the staff photographer for SNCC (Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee). Lyon, then twenty years old, travelled around the South recording the group’s activities and the events he witnessed.
