DescriptionThis is a rectangular, horizontally formatted manuscript folio on paper with a text block and painted scene on both the recto and verso. The paintings are small, square compositions featuring figural groups within architectural settings. The paintings utilize bold hues: reds, blues and greens, in flat color fields. The scenes depict gods, humans, and asuras (demons), illustrating events from the Bhagavata Purana. In the recto, an architectural window projects from the upper right corner of the painting while figures running from a man with a sword tumble out of the composition in the lower left corner. The verso features the demon Banasura approaching the gods Siva and Parvati. Interestingly, Siva has a projecting left eye. The text block lies to the left of the painted illustrations in this folio and contains writing in Devanagari script in thick black ink with red notations used for chapter headings.Exhibition History
