The Great Plains of North America exist for me both as a physical landscape and as an idea, or internal landscape. —Joe Deal
In this photograph, the grasslands and rolling hills of the Missouri Plateau blend into the sky at the horizon, causing the space to feel expansive and endless, even within the confines of the square-format photograph.
Joe Deal created this image as part of a larger series, which explores the landscapes of several states including Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and North and South Dakota. Here, his expertise with light and shadow emphasizes the subtle variations of a landscape that often appears repetitive.
