DescriptionImage of grape clusters and vine; their shadows on the wall behind.Exhibition History
Rotation 22. The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art,
Kansas City, MO, August 10, 2016 – January 8, 2017, no cat.
Pictured in bright sunlight, with areas of deep contrast, this grapevine assumes a sculptural presence in Charles Aubry’s photograph. Aubry designed fabric and wallpaper patterns and created an archive of photographic studies for artists and designers. In 1864, he started a company to produce plaster casts of flowers and plants. This endeavor may explain why he wished to emphasize, through light and shadow, the fruit’s three-dimensionality.
