Born in Neuilly, France, Matthew Pillsbury studied-and is now based-in the U.S. His photographs are fundamentally about time-both the duration of his actual exposures and the age or implications of the things and activities he records. Working in black and white with a large 8 x 10-inch camera, he often makes exposures of one or two hours in which moving figures turn into ghostly blurs. His subjects range from displays in natural history museums to extended portraits of people working on laptop computers or watching television.
