Magnificent Gifts for the 75th. The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, MO, February 13 - April 4, 2010, no cat.
Donald Lokuta’s career as a photographer, painter, teacher and historian spans more than 30 years. He photographs what he considers the unseen: “Not the expected pose, but the unexpected gesture between poses—the emotional response caught in a moment off guard. A single perfect smile and noble pose is not who we really are. We are really who we are when no one is looking—when our real humanity is unguarded.”
During the 80s and 90s, Lokuta worked closely with renowned artist George Segal. During that time, Lokuta took nearly 15,000 photographs chronicling the life and work of one of the world’s great sculptors. This photograph was taken of the George Segal sculpture, Chance Meeting, which resides in the Nelson-Atkins’ permanent collection.
