DescriptionImage of woman in dress with bare feet lying in grass.Exhibition HistoryRotation 17. The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, MO, August 6, 2014 – January 11, 2015, no cat.
In this image, a young girl lies in the grass, eyes closed and arms crossed behind her head. Her posture suggests a mood of dreamy introspection. For Mark Steinmetz, showing something of people’s inner lives is a compelling aspect of portraiture. The photographer retains a certain personal distance however, which he feels is also essential. The resulting portrait, as seen in this image, is often both tender and respectful.
