The Parisian publisher Adolphe Giraudon (1849–1929)
sold these prints as studies for painters. An advertisement from 1880 marketed the photographs as “instantaneous reproductions of peasant men and women, harvesters, winnowers, shepherds, laundresses, etc.” and described them as “a valuable resource to landscape artists.” According to Giraudon, the photographer of these images wished to be anonymous, which is why they are now referred to as “Giraudon’s Artist.”
