Magnificent Gifts for the 75th. The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, MO, February 13 - April 4, 2010, no cat.
An unusual architectural subject for Eugène Cuvelier, this image was taken while standing on the earthen bank above the wharf in Arras, France, Cuvelier’s birth place. The Porte d’Eau, or Door of Water, directly overlooks the quay along the active waterway. The city of Arras, known for its restrained Flemish style in architecture, dates back to at least the 4th century.
