The unidentified photographer of this print is believed to have worked in the circle of French sculptor Pierre Charles Simart. The photograph derives from an album known as L’Album Simart, which features large prints made from enlarged glass negatives. Enlargements were extremely rare in the late 1850s. This highly unusual technique emphasizes the sumptuous tones and remarkable tactility of the subject.
