DescriptionImage of group of uniformed men standing next to one another with one sitting on the ground. Tents are visible at the base of a sloping hill along the right.Gallery LabelIn this photograph, Major Burton and his division stand in casual formation with their tents in the background. Roger Fenton made this image while serving as the English army’s official photographer in the Crimean War, a conflict between Russia and an alliance of England, France, and Turkey. Working out of a horse-drawn photographic van, Fenton made about 360 photographs in the spring of 1855—the first extensive photographic documentation of a war. Fenton photographed landscapes ravaged by battle and made posed portraits of leading officers.
