Peter Bialobrzeski has long been fascinated by places where people immerse themselves in nature. In the photographs from his series Heimat-a title that roughly translates to "the place I'm from"-Bialobrzeski presents landscapes in which human figures assume a diminished stature amidst majestic mountaintops and expansive skies. His unabashed appreciation of beautiful vistas strikes a balance between descriptive fact and romantic rumination. The skiers and hikers in these scenes pursue modern leisure activities, but their diminutive scale suggests a more mystical, emotional desire to absorb oneself in the world's immensity. In this way, Bialobrzeski's landscapes serve a metaphoric function, becoming personal explorations of places in his native Germany where he feels spiritually at home.
