Isaac H. Bonsall made this image of Union soldiers during his service as a military photographer for the Engineer Brigade of the Army of the Cumberland. He worked far from actual combat, recording encampments, buildings, and bridges of military significance. Bonsall’s Civil War work has only recently been rediscovered.
He opened his first photography studio in Cincinnati. In the late 1850s, he worked briefly in Kansas City, Lawrence, Leavenworth, and New Orleans. At the start of the war, he returned to Ohio to enlist in the army.
