DescriptionImage of a bearded man standing and leaning on an instrument beside a woman who is seated on a barrel with her head down.Gallery Label
The casual stance of these figures paused on a street corner in Paris differs significantly from the more formal postures and props commonly used in studio portraiture at this time. Charles Nègre, who trained as a painter before taking up photography in the 1840s, may have made this photograph as a study for his paintings, which often featured such scenes of everyday life.
