Between 1849 and 1851, Maxime Du Camp made an extended visit to the Middle East. To prepare for this trip, Du Camp took lessons in photography from Gustave Le Gray, a noted photographer in Paris. During his travels, Du Camp made a large series of photographs, a selection of which was published in the album Egypte, Nubie, Palestine, et Syrie (1852). Du Camp was one of the first photographers to extensively document the archaeological ruins of the region.
