Magnificent Gifts for the 75th. The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, MO, February 13 - April 4, 2010, no cat.
Working to document the urban landscape, Eugène Atget photographed the city of Paris through the early 20th century, taking into consideration all facets of Parisian life: people, architecture, street scenes and the surrounding countryside. He used a large-format, wooden bellows camera and often photographed during the early mornings when the streets were nearly empty. His work, though documentary in style, presents a poetic, almost dream-like vision of the Paris cityscape.
