Félix Teynard travelled to Egypt in the 1850s to photograph ancient architectural sites. He modeled his journey on the Description of Egypt, a twenty-three-volume publication compiled to capture and classify Egyptian history following Napoleon’s invasion in 1798. Teynard took this view at Philae, a temple complex located (at the time) on an island in Upper Egypt. Teynard chose a high vantage point and waited for the raking sun to reveal details in the figures carved into the face of a temple. His choice balances the desires to document information and convey an artistic sensibility.
