Magnificent Gifts for the 75th. The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, MO, February 13 - April 4, 2010, no cat.
Thomas Johnson photographed the overall operation of the Delaware and Hudson Canal Company, formed in 1823 to forge a practicable route to transport valuable anthracite coal from the mines in Carbondale, Pennsylvania, to New York City. Johnson documented the machine shops, rail lines, bridges, shafts and canals, and included them in a small edition album titled Views of the Delaware and Hudson Canal and Gravity Railroad. Johnson’s views are among the relatively few large-format photographs taken in the eastern United States during the Civil War era.
