A leading Paris portrait photographer of his day, Félix Nadar’s fame rivaled that of many of his sitters—including the subject of this photograph, the French feminist and novelist George Sand. Here, Nadar isolates Sand against a plain background; the shapeless dress directs attention to her face. The visual result is simple and powerful: a hint of inner character, rather than a mere record of outward appearance.
