DescriptionArchival pigmented inkjet print. Inset: Timothy O'Sullivan, Planum Crater, Mono Lake, Nevada, 1868 (Courtesy of U.S. geological Survey). Composite panorama of desert landscape with 6 overlapped and staggered images; five in color, one in black and white.Gallery Label
In this panorama, Klett staggers five of his own color views with a reproduction of a Timothy O'Sullivan photograph, taken during O'Sullivan's work for Clarence King's survey of the late 1860s. Where O'Sullivan conveyed the vastness of the land within a single rectangular frame, Klett constructs his scene in multiple layers. Photographing throughout the day, from sunrise to dusk, Klett juxtaposes images such that the eye finds it difficult to rest on any one plane without slipping into its adjacent scene. Aesthetically, Klett's panorama demonstrates the complexities of time, with their various rates of flow, obstruction, and duration.
