This church by Christopher Wren (1632–1723) near London Bridge suggests Imperial grandeur. This sense of the power of a far flung empire was implicit in British culture and can also be found in music such as the patriotic works of Sir Edward Elgar (1857–1934), who was a contemporary of Hedley Fitton. The lightly suggested foreground balances the somewhat overbearing architecture beyond.
