Like other Surrealist artists, Joan Miró sought to express a reality that was above and beyond the conventional realm. Toward that end, he experimented with "pure psychic automatism," a form of doodling without the intervention of rational thought. Miró was further inspired by the art of children and the Altamira cave paintings in northern Spain.
