DescriptionImage of an older woman with short hair and right arm raised above her head. She looks up with a pained expression. Extensive silver inscriptions fill the space around her.Exhibition HistoryRotation 25. The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, MO, October 19, 2018- March 17, 2019, no cat.
In his portraits of the early 1990s, Jeffrey Wolin conjoined text and image to deepen the stories he could convey. In this poignant portrait of his mother, Wolin writes directly on the image’s surface. In his first-person text, he details her struggles with devastating memory loss, as well as his own recollections of his family’s past. Painful yet honest, Wolin’s words become part of the picture, in both figurative and literal terms.
