DescriptionImage of a reclining man reading Stereoscopic Photograph magazine (focus on enlarged feet in foreground).Gallery LabelThese closely cropped images of a man reading a magazine appear the same at first glance, but upon closer inspection, the perspective of the two photographs differs slightly. When observed through a stereoscope—a handheld or large viewing device like the one featured here—the two photographs converge into one three-dimensional image. This revolutionary process challenged the ways people understood visual perception. In this example, the photographer intentionally situated the camera lens near the man’s feet to enhance the perspective and create a strong three-dimensional effect.
